How To Prepare For An Earthquake

A state of emergency like an earthquake may occur whenever and wherever you are so it is best to be prepared for such occasions. We have witnessed mass destruction due to mother nature's wrath and many casualties have been reported.

Nobody can expect such a thing to happen but it is never an excuse to not do anything about it. If it were to happen where you live then you should ask yourself, what should I do?

Earthquake, What To Do?

We might not be able to predict the timing of such an event to happen. However, if you live in an area where earthquakes are something frequently happening then it is your best bet to follow a series of steps on the next course of action.

So you should be able to identify what needs to be done before, during, and after an earthquake.

Before An Earthquake

There are several crucial steps that need to be learned to prepare ourselves once we face an earthquake.

Some of them include:
  • Know the early signs of an earthquake like a rumbling noise that becomes stronger as time goes on, shakiness that occurs all around whether it is something that is dangling that starts to shake or even a glass of water that creates waves inside.
  • Identify all the safe places around you. Make sure that it is protected if something falls off like under the table or even the mattress.
  • Plan and train yourself with the necessary steps once an earthquake does happen
  • Position yourself in crawling if an earthquake occurs
  • Make an evacuation plan such as a safe exit from your home and an alternative route like the window.
  • Prepare an emergency kit with enough food and water supply to last 3 days.

During An Earthquake

When an earthquake does happen, you should follow these important steps below:
  • Start crawling and move under the bed, table or any furniture that is strong enough for you to be underneath it
  • Protect your neck and head with your hand or even a pillow
  • Remain in a safe position until the earthquake has fully stopped
  • If you are inside your home then it is best for you to remain inside as it is much safer.
  • Stay away from any windows, doors, and walls
  • If you are trapped, get the attention of others by screaming or knocking on something
  • If you are inside a moving vehicle, drive the vehicle to somewhere safe and stay inside your vehicle at all times

After An Earthquake

After the end of an earthquake, you will still expect subtle shaking to occur in a few minutes, days, weeks or even months after the incident. This is what to do after an earthquake:
  • Get the attention of the rescue team by knocking on something hard like metal surfaces, pipes or anything that creates a strong sound
  • Protect your eyes, nose, and mouth from any dust and debris
  • Do not enter other ruins areas for your own safety
  • Leave the area of the building as soon as possible once you hear something moving or a strange sound.
  • Avoid the use of any electrical appliances. If it is dark, use torchlight or candles only
  • If you experience any bad injuries, you should get prompt treatment as quick as possible

In A Nutshell

Everyone should be prepared for any emergency events like an earthquake that might happen at any time.

It should not only focus on earthquakes alone but also on other disasters like floods, landslides, tsunamis, typhoons, and many more.

An early preparation like this will not only save your own life but also the lives of your family members.
