Top 5 Most Expensive Things Destroyed In Movies

In the film industry, props have been used as a replacement for the things we truly used in our daily lives which of course would be very costly to be used if they were broken. With the advancement of technologies, many special cuttings have been made without having to use proper materials or the real background.

However, there have also been many cases where the actors have destroyed the real things that we truly used which cost millions of dollars whether it was intentional or unintentional. Some were deliberately being destroyed for the sake of pure satisfaction for the viewers.

Here we would share with you some of the most expensive things that have been destroyed while shooting a movie. Some of them were very expensive per se.

5. Camera worth $300,000

In the movie Blade: Trinity, people were always talking about the archery skills of Jessica Biel. She was forced to learn how to fire an arrow for this movie and managed to master it really well.

So the director made a mistake by requesting Jessica Biel to shoot an arrow directly at the camera in one particular scene. Even if a great archer can manage to shoot at the target precisely and produce a great visual effect, not many expected that she would literally fire the arrow directly at the camera.

But to get the desired effect, they had to open a hole two by two inches in size for the lens of the camera and it was at that very hole that Biel's arrow went through and ultimately destroyed the $300,000 camera.

4. Destruction of Locomotive Train

Most people nowadays considered silent movies to be cheap and not full of great action. But they are truly wrong. Buster Keaton is a man who wished to do something extraordinary to the movie and did it in The General film in 1926.

In the movie, the director and actor, Keaton managed to surprise the audience with one of the most expensive acts in the history of silent movies. The locomotive train would hit a burning bridge and crash into the river below it.

To this day, we could witness many train accidents in all types of movies from Wanted to The Fugitive, and many more.

In 1926, Keaton did not have access to the special technology being used in the modern film era so he had to do it on a real locomotive train instead. At that time, the price of the train was around $42,000 but if we were to take into account the inflation rate, the real price today would have been $682,000.

3. Destruction of 9 Lykan Hypersport Car

In the Fast Furious movie series, there have been many cars being destroyed as part of the movie scene for the past 20 years of the publication of the movie. However, the true value of the cars being destroyed has been proven hard to be estimated since all of the cars were made as stunt cars which are specially designed cars looking similar to the real ones.

In 2017, the total value of the cars being destroyed was estimated to be $500 million if we were to take into consideration the real price of the car being sold. Approaching the Furious 7, they destroyed almost 1500 cars and in that movie, they wrecked the rare Lykan Hypersport real bad.

The company has made 10 action car scenes for the movie and 9 cars have been destroyed in total. The 10th car was sold in an auction at a starting price of $100,000. It received more than $500,000 in sales and it was expected to reach $2 million. So this means that at least $1 million worth of stunt cars were destroyed in the movie.

2. Explosion of Religious House

There were several movie directors like Michael Bay who loved explosion scenes. In the movie Bad Boys II, he used his expertise to make one explosive scene that resulted in the destruction of a religious house.

This scene is very outstanding as the religious house was worth $16.5 million. The owner paid $16.5 million intending to demolish the building and later divide it into 3 respective lots.

But rather than doing it himself, he thought it would be more fun to see it in action especially being featured in a movie and it seems Michael Bay definitely pulled it off. To make the scene more interesting, the house was slightly decorated to make the walls brighter and made several other parts to be more explosive.

1. Las Vegas Casino

Sitting at the top of this list will be the destruction of Sands Casino in Las Vegas. At the end of the movie Con Air, there was one scene that showed an airplane landing at an airport and later crashing into the casino.

Despite the casino exchanging ownerships several times for years, it was sold in 1988 with a whopping price of $110 million. In 1996, the decision has been made to destroy the casino to make way for a new casino and resorts. The original plan was to use explosives to tear the building down.

But the producer of the Con Air movie managed to persuade the owner of the casino to postpone the demolition process for several weeks so that it can be used as a prop in the movie. 14 movies were made recording the destruction scene of this casino.
