What Does 5s Stand For in Workplace?

Hard work and dedication will be the key to success and having good standards to follow is definitely helpful. This is similar to the concept of 5s which at first introduced in Japan in the 1980s and has become a norm that is currently practiced in Japan.

The 5s concept served the purpose of creating a conducive environment full of good qualities in ensuring that there is a standard or guideline that must be abode by all people so that there is an improvement from time to time.

Seiketsu > Standardize

Shitsuke > Self-Discipline

5S can be said as a method used by companies to evaluate the capability of an organization at the workplace and has become standard management that is more visualized.

1. Seiri/Sort

The first step of 5S is seiri which means sorting out and separating all the negative and unnecessary things that one does not need.

This means the person will first need to identify all the things that he/she feels is of less importance to ease out the whole process.

2. Seiton/Straighten

After all the irrelevant things have been put aside, step two will require the person to straighten up and rearrange all the things that you will need so that they will be ready to be used. The person will also need to provide easy access to it.

It is recommended that you pick a strategic place to keep all of the essentials therefore, it will be easier for the documents to be taken and returned immediately.

3. Seiso/Sweep

The next process will be to sweep or simply clean up after all the mess has been made so that everything will always look tidy and organized.

This is probably something that most people have trouble doing as it is not a habit for them.

4. Seiketsu/Standardize

When everything is in order and organized, it will be more convenient for a person to do their job.

This step will require the person to standardize everything that has been done by setting up a set of rules that must be followed. This is to make sure that the final result will be a standard for everyone.

5. Shitsuke/Self-Discipline

The final and most important step will be to have self-discipline whereby the person needs to follow the rules all the time to maintain high standards and improve performance each day.

When constantly being practiced each day, it will ultimately become a habit burrowed within you and you will do everything naturally without having to be told.
The 5S concept is not something new today and has been practiced everywhere around the world, especially in multinational companies. In this era of globalization, there have been a lot of agencies out there that use the 5S concept as a benchmark to improve the workplace.

Carrying out the 5S concept and having a good grasp of this concept, will automatically improve the quality and productivity effectively because:

The 5S concept can easily be understood by everyone since it only requires general knowledge and high discipline. Therefore, 5S needs to be practiced routinely to maintain a good working performance and contribute to the development of the company.

Some of you might have heard of the word "Kaizen" as it signifies the constant increase in performance from year on out. Each time one level is reached, we would always target another level.
